“Trump Considers Reviving Keystone XL Pipeline”

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced the potential revival of the controversial Keystone XL pipeline project amid ongoing trade discussions between Canada and the United States to prevent additional U.S. tariffs on Canadian products.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump indicated that the Keystone XL Pipeline, previously canceled by President Joe Biden, could be resurrected. He shared an AI-generated image depicting him lifting a massive pipeline labeled “KEYSTONE” from a grave, with American flags in the background and a headstone reading “Buried by Biden.”

While Canada has not officially responded to Trump’s statement regarding the project’s revival, Washington announced a temporary halt on scheduled 50% tariffs on various Canadian goods for three days to facilitate further negotiations.

The history of the Keystone XL expansion dates back to July 2008 when it was first proposed during Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s tenure and the end of U.S. President George W. Bush’s second term. The project faced various approvals and rejections over the years, with significant opposition from environmental and Indigenous groups.

In November 2011, the U.S. State Department required TransCanada to reroute the pipeline to avoid sensitive areas in Nebraska. Despite ongoing challenges and legal battles, the project saw multiple setbacks and approvals before ultimately being terminated in June 2021 by TC Energy.

Fast forward to 2026, Trump has authorized a new project to transport Canadian oil across the border, potentially reviving parts of the Keystone XL project. South Bow, in partnership with Bridger Pipeline, is exploring options to increase Canadian oil supplies to meet market demand.

As discussions continue, Trump’s recent move to postpone tariffs on Canadian goods signals a potential shift in the future of the Keystone XL project, with renewed interest and developments in the pipeline industry.
