“Canada & U.S. Near Trade Deal: Tariff Reductions Expected”

Canada and the United States are in the process of finalizing a trade agreement where U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to reduce tariff rates on Canadian goods in exchange for the reintroduction of American liquor in provincial stores and other potential concessions. Prime Minister Mark Carney briefed provincial leaders on the emerging deal, aimed at assisting sectors impacted by tariffs, although it falls short of eliminating all of Trump’s tariffs.

Although specific details have not been disclosed publicly, insider information suggests that U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum will be reduced from 50% to 25%. Negotiations on derivatives and exemptions are ongoing. Additionally, the agreement is anticipated to lower the tariff on Canadian-built cars and trucks from 25% to 15%.

The highly integrated North American auto market means that vehicles assembled in Canada often contain over 50% of U.S.-manufactured components. If tariffs are applied only to the non-U.S. portion, the effective rate could potentially decrease by up to half (7.5%).

Following the meeting, Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe praised Carney and his team for working towards a trade agreement with the U.S., describing it as best-in-class and offering preferred market access for Canada. Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston also expressed optimism about the proposed deal, highlighting the preservation of Canada’s supply management system and favorable defense procurement terms.

President Trump has hailed the agreement as beneficial for both countries, emphasizing the positive impact on U.S. farmers. Carney affirmed significant progress in negotiations with the U.S., emphasizing Canada’s aim to secure maximum market access for its businesses.

Canada has been seeking relief for sectors like steel, aluminum, auto, and lumber, which have been burdened by high levies for over a year. Trump mentioned that there will be no tariffs into Canada, citing the reduction of previous tariffs charged by Canada on U.S. goods. The U.S. has also urged Canada to lift retaliatory tariffs on American autos.

Top negotiators from both countries recently met for discussions. Canada’s Trade Minister, Dominic LeBlanc, confirmed the necessity of safeguarding Canada’s supply-managed dairy sector within the agreement. The prospective deal is perceived as mutually beneficial by U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer, aiming to bolster North American economic strength.

The U.S. administration has insisted on reinstating American liquor in Canadian stores and urged the removal of retaliatory tariffs on U.S. autos. Carney highlighted efforts to address outstanding trade issues and deliver tangible benefits for Canadian businesses and families.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre expressed relief over progress in trade talks but emphasized the need for a comprehensive deal without tariffs on steel, aluminum, and autos, along with exemptions to Buy American policies. The business community welcomed the tariff pause, urging a swift resolution to provide much-needed certainty for businesses.
