“Canadian Flag Football Star Eyes Olympics Debut”

Sabrina Gervais, a dedicated mother, healthcare professional, and seasoned flag football player, is aiming to add “Olympian” to her list of achievements. Leading Canada’s national women’s team in the 2026 world championship, the accomplished defensive back is not only eyeing a gold medal but also a spot in the 2028 Los Angeles Games, where flag football is set to debut in the Olympic arena.

Expressing her excitement, Gervais shared, “It would be realizing a dream I would’ve never dreamt before. I never thought about the Olympics, but now that I’m still in the loop, I think the chances are good if I can stay healthy and continue to be a leader for my team. That would definitely be a dream come true.”

The International Federation of American Football (IFAF) world championship kicks off in Düsseldorf, Germany, with Canada’s initial matches against Panama, Brazil, and Japan. Securing a top-two finish would ensure an Olympic berth, with a provision for the top-three teams if the United States advances to the gold-medal game as the host country already has a guaranteed spot in Los Angeles.

While the world championship serves as an Olympic qualifier, failing to secure a spot in Germany would mean additional qualifying events in the future. Canada, known as a strong contender for gold, earned its place in the championship by finishing as the runner-up in last year’s IFAF Americas Continental competition.

Reflecting on the upcoming challenges, Gervais, hailing from Maskinonge, Que., expressed optimism about facing Mexico again, focusing on learning from past experiences to enhance their performance. Canada’s recent bronze medal win at the World Games in China has put them on the radar, with Gervais noting the growing recognition of their team’s capabilities.

Beyond her athletic pursuits, Gervais balances her passion for flag football with her roles as a mother of twins and a healthcare professional. Emphasizing the importance of resilience and self-care, she underlines the value of rest, healthy habits, and a supportive network in maintaining her physical and mental well-being.

As a mentor to younger players, Gervais remains committed to fostering a positive team environment and guiding her teammates on and off the field. She credits head coach Rachel Lessard for the team’s success, highlighting the coach’s leadership and values that contribute to Canada’s cohesion and performance.

Looking ahead, Gervais maintains a day-by-day approach to her future in the sport, focusing on enjoying the present moment and making a lasting impact both on the field and within the community.
