Deloitte Canada Lowers 2027 Growth Forecast by 20%

Deloitte Canada has revised its growth forecast for Canada’s economy in 2027, lowering it by 20 percent due to challenging conditions facing consumers and businesses. This adjustment follows a recent American ban on specific Canadian imports, contributing to heightened tensions in the Canada-U.S. trade relationship.

The trade war escalation is expected to result in a significant economic slowdown towards the end of this year and into early 2027, with varying impacts across different sectors of the Canadian economy. Chief economist Dawn Desjardins highlighted the uneven distribution of the financial burden from U.S. tariffs and Canada’s retaliatory measures, emphasizing potential growth opportunities in certain sectors amidst the challenging environment.

Deloitte’s updated economic outlook projects a 1.6 percent GDP growth for Canada in 2027, down from the previously anticipated two percent. The firm also anticipates a slight improvement in economic growth for 2026, now forecasting a 0.9 percent expansion compared to the earlier estimate of 0.7 percent.

The ongoing economic uncertainty, fueled by trade tensions and policy changes, is causing concerns for both consumers and businesses in Canada. Desjardins emphasized the need for caution in spending, leading to a more conservative approach towards consumption and slower economic growth.

In a separate update, Statistics Canada reported stagnant GDP growth for July, following three consecutive months of economic expansion. The report highlighted mixed performances across different industries, with the services-producing sector remaining relatively flat while the goods-producing sector saw minimal changes.

Looking ahead, economists are closely monitoring the impact of recent tariffs and trade disputes on Canada’s economic landscape. The upcoming release of the September jobs report and inflation data will provide further insights for policymakers, including the Bank of Canada, as they navigate the evolving economic conditions and potential interest rate adjustments.

Despite the current challenges, there are indications of resilience in certain sectors and opportunities for growth, albeit within a more cautious and uncertain economic environment. The evolving trade dynamics between Canada and the U.S. continue to shape the economic outlook, with a focus on achieving a fair and balanced resolution to mitigate further disruptions.
