Ed Sheeran’s Tour Loses All Supporting Acts in Solidarity

After singer Ed Sheeran responded to the controversy surrounding rapper Macklemore’s removal from his tour due to pro-Palestinian remarks, all remaining supporting acts have now pulled out of Sheeran’s tour. Sheeran expressed dismay over the Israel-Palestine conflict, labeling it a “human tragedy,” but opted not to take a public position. Despite attributing Macklemore’s dismissal to venues and promoters, Sheeran’s tour lost supporting acts Aaron Rowe, Lukas Graham, Beoga, and Finneas, who withdrew in solidarity with Palestinians, leaving the tour without opening acts.

Following concerns raised by upcoming venues after Sheeran’s performances at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium, where threats to cancel his shows were made if Macklemore, 43, remained as the opener, the singer clarified that the decision was made by the promoters and not himself. Videos from Macklemore’s performances, featuring him chanting “Free Palestine” and expressing solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza and the Israeli-occupied West Bank, faced criticism from pro-Israel groups.

Sheeran’s co-openers for the remaining U.S. shows, Aaron Rowe and Beoga, announced their departure from the tour, citing personal reasons tied to their stance on colonization and justice activism. Danish artist Lukas Graham, set to open alongside Rowe, highlighted the importance of discussing war and civilian casualties, emphasizing the need for open dialogue. Finneas, Billie Eilish’s brother and collaborator, disclosed his decision to drop out of upcoming South American tour dates with Sheeran, advocating for artists to speak up for the oppressed.

Macklemore, in a statement, expressed his commitment to truth-telling and criticized the prioritization of sensitivities over human suffering. The controversy has underscored the challenges artists face when addressing sensitive political issues, with repercussions ranging from tour disruptions to public backlash. The fate of Sheeran’s tour remains uncertain, as the remaining U.S. dates approach, with questions arising about the possibility of securing new opening acts or proceeding without them.
