“Markham Hosts Inaugural NTT IndyCar Series Outside Toronto”

Markham is gearing up for an exciting weekend as it hosts the NTT IndyCar Series, including the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy event. This marks the first time the race is being held outside of Toronto, featuring a brand-new track layout spanning 3.52 kilometers and 12 turns. The course will traverse the Unionville GO station grounds, York University Markham Campus, and the Markham Pan Am Centre.

To reach the event venue, attendees are encouraged to utilize GO Transit, York Region Transit, or drive via Highway 407, with parking available to the west of the grounds. Metrolinx is enhancing Stouffville Line services for seamless transportation to and from the track.

Residents of Markham have experienced track construction disruptions in the lead-up to the event, including limited parking at Unionville GO, road repaving, and installation of grandstands and retainer walls. Road closures in Markham Centre will persist until Monday morning, affecting Enterprise Boulevard, Kennedy Road, YMCA Boulevard, University Boulevard, and South Unionville Boulevard.

The highlight of the weekend will be the IndyCar race on Sunday, with Spaniard Alex Palou leading the points standings and favored to win. Other drivers to watch include Pato O’Ward, Kyle Kirkwood, David Malukas, Christian Lundgaard, and Rinus Veekay. Local talent like Anthony Martella and Chase Pelletier will also showcase their skills in supporting categories.

Drivers have noted the unique challenges of the Markham track, praised for its smooth surface but also presenting unknown elements due to its novelty. Tickets for Saturday and Sunday can be purchased on the event website, while Friday’s practice and qualifying sessions are free on Fan Friday, with donations to Make-A-Wish Canada encouraged upon entry.
