A new snake species discovered in the jungle of New Guinea has been named after the iconic guitarist Slash from Guns N’ Roses. The scientists at the Field Museum in Chicago have identified a non-venomous groundsnake measuring about 71 centimeters as Lielaphis slashi, now officially recognized as Slash’s groundsnake.
Slash, known for his passion for reptiles and support for zoos and museums, expressed his honor and excitement for having a snake species named after him. The guitarist has a long-standing interest in snakes, evident from his music and the formation of the rock group Slash’s Snakepit in 1994.
Sara Ruane, the associate curator of herpetology at the Field Museum, shared her early fascination with reptiles and how she got inspired by Slash holding a snake on a magazine cover. Describing and naming a new species, especially after someone like Slash, was a privilege for her.
The discovery of Slash’s groundsnake dates back to 2006 when it was first observed during fieldwork in New Guinea. The species, distinct from others in the same genus, poses no threat to humans but faces habitat loss due to industrial activities like coffee farming and mining.
Naming the snake after Slash not only pays tribute to the musician but also raises awareness about the fragile ecosystem where these snakes reside. Despite its rockstar namesake, Slash’s groundsnake is a harmless forest dweller, highlighting the importance of preserving biodiversity.
