The management of Quebec’s bottle deposit program is implementing changes due to long waiting times at their depots, potentially affecting Ontarians returning their empty containers. Despite extending operational hours, some depots, such as Jean-Proulx Consignaction+ near Ottawa, have faced overwhelming demand. While Quebec and Ontario have different container deposit systems, only Quebec provides refunds for items like soft drink containers and juice and milk jugs.
To address the issue, Consignaction is introducing an “express return” option for Ontario residents. This process allows residents to drop off bags of unsorted containers for processing and receive their refund through the Consignaction app approximately a week later. This method aims to enable Consignaction to sort through the containers and exclude any ineligible for a Quebec refund.
Consignaction also mentioned the potential implementation of additional verification measures to confirm the containers were originally purchased in Quebec. Additionally, seven new bulk return locations are being added in Gatineau, with addresses at 75 blvd. du Plateau, 140 blvd. Gréber, 178 rue Principale, and 1100 chemin Montréal W. The remaining three locations are yet to be announced. Most return locations in Gatineau are situated within stores and can only handle limited quantities of empty containers.
