Team GB has secured its first gold medal at the Winter Olympics as Matt Weston emerged victorious in the men’s skeleton event. Weston, aged 28, was a top contender for Team GB in Milano Cortina and displayed a strong performance from the outset, leading after the initial two heats.
His first two runs clocked in at 56.21 and 55.88, accumulating to an overall time of 1:52.09 going into the second day. Weston continued his impressive streak with a notable time of 55.63 in the third heat. His final run set a new track record at 55.61, leaving Weston emotional and in tears as he celebrated alongside teammate Marcus Wyatt and Team GB coaches.
This triumph marks a significant achievement for Weston, who had finished 15th in the previous Winter Olympics. Meanwhile, Wyatt improved his standing to seventh place with a total time of 3:45.77.
Weston expressed his overwhelming joy after the win, emphasizing the immense personal significance of the victory and the sacrifices made by his loved ones for his journey to this moment.
With this victory, Team GB has now secured a spot on the Winter Olympics medal table. Additionally, German athletes Axel Jungk and Christopher Grotheer clinched the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
Commenting on Weston’s performance, Lizzie Yarnold highlighted the intense speed and split-second decisions involved in his success. Team GB’s chef de mission, Eve Muirhead, praised Weston for his composure under pressure and exceptional performance, hailing him as a true athlete and a role model.
