The Pas Mayor Resigns Ahead of Local Election

The mayor of The Pas has resigned from his position just a few weeks before the upcoming local election and has also decided not to seek re-election this fall. Andre Murphy, who became the mayor of the northern Manitoba town in 2022, made the announcement online on Monday evening, declaring his immediate resignation.

Confirming his resignation to CBC News, Murphy stated that he has stepped down as mayor and will not be participating in the upcoming re-election. Consequently, The Pas will be without a mayor for approximately nine weeks until new councils are elected on October 28 in The Pas and across most of Manitoba. There will be no mayoral by-election held prior to the scheduled election day. Deputy mayor Carrie Atkinson will take on most of Murphy’s daily responsibilities until the election.

The former mayor mentioned that he, along with his family, reached the decision the previous week and informed the council on Monday. Despite contemplating running for another four-year term, he changed his mind during the summer. Murphy expressed his commitment to fully engaging in any role he undertakes, emphasizing that once he commits to a responsibility, he dedicates himself entirely.

Reflecting on his decision, Murphy highlighted the importance of spending more time with his family, particularly his children and grandchildren residing in eastern Canada. Although he considers The Pas his long-time home, having been part of the community for over 50 years, he clarified that his decision was primarily driven by prioritizing family obligations.

Recalling his tenure as mayor, Murphy expressed pride in fostering closer ties with neighboring communities and government bodies, addressing local challenges behind the scenes, and securing substantial grants for recreational and infrastructural developments. He expressed confidence in the town’s council and administration to sustain the positive trajectory for the community.

Acknowledging the potential opportunities ahead for the northern region, Murphy expressed his optimism and encouragement for the future prospects in northern Manitoba. He emphasized that despite his departure, The Pas is in capable hands and will continue to progress under the guidance of a dedicated team.

CBC News has contacted town councillors in The Pas for their comments on Murphy’s resignation.
