Britain is prepared to assist its allies in intercepting Russian shadow ships that are financially supporting Vladimir Putin’s military operations, according to the Foreign Secretary. Yvette Cooper has pledged to strengthen measures against Russia’s clandestine fleet, which consists of deteriorating oil tankers operating under false identities to avoid Western sanctions. The UK is advocating for more proactive measures against these shadow vessels, which are channeling funds to the Kremlin for the conflict in Ukraine and damaging crucial undersea cables.
In a recent operation, British forces supported the US in seizing a tanker linked to Russia for violating oil sanctions in Venezuela. While no British personnel have boarded these ships yet, authorities are reportedly exploring the legal framework for potential military intervention.
During a visit to Helsinki, Ms. Cooper boarded a patrol vessel and met with the Finnish Border Guard, who play a key role in defending against Russian threats along Finland’s extensive border. The Turva patrol ship was involved in an operation against a Russia-linked vessel accused of tampering with undersea cables in the Gulf of Finland.
Ms. Cooper emphasized the need for more aggressive action against the Russian shadow fleet, citing the vessels’ negative impact on sanctions, conflicts, environmental issues, and national security. She expressed readiness for enforcement operations, highlighting the importance of collaborating with international partners to increase pressure on these covert ships.
Additionally, she called for a complete ban on the transportation of Russian oil to cut off a significant source of funding for Moscow. The UK is closely monitoring enforcement actions by European allies against illicit vessels, particularly in the Baltic Sea and off the French coast.
