Morgan Klachefsky, a resident of Winnipeg, recounts a harrowing experience when her son Simon, at just 18 months old, suffered a severe allergic reaction to a cashew. Rushing him to the Winnipeg HSC Children’s Emergency Department, they discovered he had a life-threatening allergy to cashews and pistachios.
Struggling with the newfound reality of her son’s allergies, Morgan embarked on a journey to educate herself and those around her on managing anaphylactic reactions. Despite her efforts to stay informed and prepared, fear and anxiety began to overshadow her ability to trust others with Simon’s care. This led to a period of overprotection, where she hesitated to let Simon participate in social activities without her and her husband’s supervision.
As Simon grew older, his bravery and zest for life inspired Morgan to confront her fears and prioritize her mental well-being. She gradually learned to relinquish control, allowing Simon to attend events without her constant presence. Building trust with other parents and friends, she educated them on Simon’s allergies and how to keep him safe, reducing her anxieties over time.
Embracing a new perspective, Morgan recognized the importance of empowering Simon to manage his allergies independently. Teaching him to read labels, administer an EpiPen, and make informed choices about his diet, she instilled in him the responsibility of safeguarding his health. Despite initial apprehensions, she took a leap of faith by allowing Simon to attend sleepaway camp, relying on the support of loved ones and Simon’s own awareness to ensure his safety.
