The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has activated Cold Weather Payments in almost 250 postcode areas across England and Wales today. This move coincides with the Met Office issuing multiple winter weather alerts for the upcoming week. Around 500,000 households are set to benefit from these payments, receiving £25 each to assist with heating expenses.
The newly activated payments cover a total of 246 postcode areas, including regions like Greater Manchester, Cumbria, Staffordshire, Gloucestershire, and selected areas in Wales and Northern Ireland. The complete list of postcodes eligible for the payments can be found on an interactive map.
Cold Weather Payments are targeted at individuals in England and Wales who are recipients of various benefits. While a similar scheme operates in Northern Ireland, Scotland offers support for heating bills throughout the winter, irrespective of specific cold weather periods.
As of now, £25 payments have been initiated for 697 postcode areas this winter, with 18 districts receiving two payments due to an extended cold spell lasting two weeks. The latest round of payments is expected to reach approximately 532,000 households, with Greater Manchester alone accounting for around 336,000 recipients. The total expenditure on Cold Weather Payments for this activation stands at £13.3 million.
In England and Wales, payments are triggered when an area is forecasted to experience average temperatures below zero for seven consecutive days. Meteorologists are predicting a cold spell leading into the New Year, with subzero temperatures anticipated across many regions.
An estimated 3.9 million people are eligible for Cold Weather Payments under the DWP scheme, with 1.2 million of them receiving Pensions Credit. Individuals receiving benefits such as Pension Credit, Income Support, JSA, ESA, Universal Credit, and Support for Mortgage Interest may qualify for the Cold Weather Payment scheme.
Not all beneficiaries automatically receive Cold Weather Payments, as several criteria determine eligibility. Further details on eligibility criteria can be found on the GOV.UK website. The £25 payments are directly deposited into recipients’ bank accounts within 14 working days, appearing with a unique payment reference including the recipient’s National Insurance number followed by ‘DWP CWP’. Application for this payment is not required.
The Cold Weather Payments have been triggered by various weather stations across different regions, each estimated to benefit a specific number of eligible households.
