“Trump’s Venezuela Intervention Disrupts Global Order”

The removal of Nicholas Maduro, who had ascended from a bus driver to a de facto ruler in Venezuela, is likely to be welcomed by many. However, the way in which Donald Trump orchestrated his ousting has once again disrupted global order. Alongside the actions taken against Venezuela, this incident showcases President Trump’s assertive foreign policy approach. His expressed interest in acquiring Greenland and reclaiming the Panama Canal underscores his ambitions. The recent events in Venezuela highlight the lack of international approval for the US intervention, indicating a breach of legal norms.

Critics argue that Maduro, who followed in the footsteps of Hugo Chavez and oversaw an increasingly authoritarian regime, lacked legitimacy. Venezuela, once a prosperous nation with abundant resources, has now deteriorated into an economic crisis. Despite its natural beauty and vibrancy, the country no longer resembles its former status as a South American hub. While Maduro’s democratic credentials were questioned, the mere presence of opposition victory in the 2024 presidential elections did not automatically justify regime change. The strategic importance of Venezuela’s oil reserves cannot be overlooked, especially in light of US interests in safeguarding companies like Chevron.

The intervention was not solely motivated by concerns over narcotics, as evidenced by the extensive military buildup in the Caribbean region. The outcome, although still unfolding, appears to be a calculated success for Trump. However, traditional allies of Venezuela such as Russia, China, and Iran now find themselves on the losing end. The UK, distancing itself from the Venezuelan operation, faces a dilemma regarding the legality and implications of the US-led action. While Maduro’s exit may benefit Venezuela internally, the manner in which it was orchestrated raises concerns about the erosion of global order and the US’s evolving role on the world stage. The US’s assertive actions and departure from its traditional leadership role pose challenges for its allies and the broader international community.
