Condom Shortage Hits Winter Olympics Village

The Winter Olympics village at Milano Cortina reportedly faces a shortage of condoms despite distributing 10,000 free contraceptives to athletes. Known for its lively atmosphere, the accommodation for Olympians has seen numerous stories of amorous encounters over the years.

To address potential issues, organizers provided free contraceptives, although only 10,000 were given out at Milano Cortina compared to the 200,000 distributed at the Paris Summer Games in 2024. With approximately 10,500 athletes in Paris and just under 3,000 in northern Italy, the quantity of condoms proved insufficient.

An unnamed athlete revealed to Italian newspaper La Stampa that the supplies ran out in three days, with uncertainties about when more would arrive. Additionally, Olympic officials introduced so-called ‘anti-sex’ beds in an effort to curb off-camera activities, but the measures seem ineffective.

This isn’t the first instance of condom shortages at the Olympics, as Sydney 2000 also had to order more after exhausting their initial allocation. Health remains a top priority, with a message to athletes emphasizing prevention and common sense upon their arrival in Milan.

Former Olympic champions have highlighted the village’s explicit nature, acknowledging the prevalent intimacy among athletes. The spirit of the Olympics includes such interactions, with the distribution of condoms reflecting this reality. The ongoing Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games offer over 850 hours of live action on discovery+ via Prime Video, accessible through a £3.99 entertainment subscription.
