“Gluten-Free Café Dove Inn Shuts Down Amid Industry Hardships”

A popular B&B and café, known for its gluten-free offerings, has shut down in a significant setback for the local community. The owner cited the establishment’s challenging location as a key factor contributing to the lack of customer traffic that ultimately led to its closure.

The Dove Inn, located in Alburgh, Norfolk, ceased operations after catering to patrons for two and a half years under the stewardship of owner Sonya Resemblance, who fondly referred to her clientele as “beautiful people.” This closure adds to the growing challenges faced by the pub and hospitality industry in the UK, with numerous establishments facing closure due to escalating expenses and evolving consumer behaviors.

In a recent example, the cherished White Horse on London End in Beaconsfield permanently shut down earlier this month. Pub owners had previously cautioned about the industry’s precarious state, emphasizing the financial strains they were enduring, which resulted in the closure of 300 pubs in the initial quarter of 2025.

Despite receiving accolades such as being named one of the UK’s top 50 cafés at the 2025 Small Business Awards shortly before closing, the Dove Inn faced insurmountable difficulties. Sonya Resemblance, who took over the inn in July 2023, offered a menu entirely free of gluten, a feature she took pride in for providing safe dining options for those with dietary restrictions.

Expressing gratitude to patrons, Sonya thanked them for their support and praised the business for creating employment opportunities, offering training programs, and serving as a hub for social interaction, which she believed was crucial for mental well-being. However, she acknowledged that despite these efforts, the business struggled to thrive in its current location, attributing the closure to this factor.

The decision to close followed an earlier warning issued by the business about its ongoing challenges amidst the broader economic pressures affecting the retail and hospitality sectors. Despite efforts from loyal customers to support the business, Sonya confirmed the closure on Friday, January 16, prompting an outpouring of supportive messages from the community.

One heartfelt message from a customer expressed sadness at the news and appreciation for the pleasant meeting place and exceptional food provided by the establishment.
