“London Mayor Warns of AI’s Threat to Job Security”

Artificial intelligence has been highlighted as a potential threat to job security by Sir Sadiq Khan, who warned of its potential as a “weapon of mass destruction of jobs” if not addressed promptly. The London Mayor expressed concerns that the rapid advancement of technology could lead to widespread unemployment and worsen inequality if left unregulated. He emphasized that the impact of AI on the workforce in London could be significant, with over half of workers anticipating its effects on their jobs within the next year.

In a forthcoming speech, Sir Sadiq will urge for decisive action, stating, “We must make a choice: harness the power of AI for positive change or risk its destructive impact on employment.” He also announced the formation of a London Taskforce to conduct a swift evaluation of AI’s potential repercussions.

Citing the negative consequences of social media oversight, Sir Sadiq stressed the importance of proactive measures. He highlighted the dangers of delayed responses to technological advancements, drawing parallels to issues like mental health crises, online abuse, and disinformation. Urging leaders to prioritize public protection, he emphasized the need for swift action to prevent similar pitfalls.

A recent report by LinkedIn revealed that 70% of job skills are projected to evolve by 2030, prompting Sir Sadiq to emphasize the urgency of preparing the economy and workforce for the impending changes. He emphasized the collective responsibility to facilitate a smooth transition and ensure workers are equipped with the necessary skills. A new taskforce will be established to develop recommendations for London to adapt and upskill its workforce effectively.
