A powerful storm named Goretti has hit the United Kingdom today, covering the entire country in snow and ice warnings as blizzards sweep across vast areas. The Met Office has issued yellow and amber alerts due to hazardous road conditions caused by snow, ice, and rain, with temperatures plummeting to as low as -12C. Goretti, named by Meteo France, is predicted to bring severe weather to the southwest region, intensifying rapidly over Thursday and Friday.
Despite the disruptive conditions, the storm has created picturesque winter landscapes, with snow blanketing the scenery and residents making the most of the snowy weather. The Met Office has cautioned residents in the warned areas to exercise caution as Goretti is expected to bring very strong winds, especially in southwest England, with gusts reaching 70-80mph and potentially up to 100mph. Travel disruptions are anticipated, including delays on roads and railways, and some areas may be isolated by heavy snow.
The Met Office also warned of possible power outages affecting various services, including mobile phone coverage, before the snow transitions into rain and sleet by the weekend. Snow accumulation could reach up to 30cm in certain regions, creating a festive atmosphere weeks after Christmas. Snowdrifts have caused significant disruptions in parts of the country, burying towns and expansive rural areas under layers of snow.
Authorities have advised that snow may impact travel plans, yet some individuals have braved the conditions by ice skating on frozen lakes despite the risks. The wintry weather is expected to persist throughout the remainder of the week.
