Streeting praised Jesy’s bravery in speaking out about the harrowing experience, highlighting the need for enhanced screening measures for spinal muscular atrophy to support affected families.
Efforts are underway to conduct a large-scale study on newborn screening for spinal muscular atrophy following recommendations from the UK National Screening Committee. Streeting mentioned the availability of more treatments for the condition, offering hope for children with spinal muscular atrophy to not only survive but thrive.
Unlike many other developed countries, the UK does not routinely screen newborns for spinal muscular atrophy. The Mirror advocates for the implementation of a cost-effective “Jesy test” at £5 per screening to address this gap in healthcare. Jesy emphasized the importance of taking action when life-changing interventions are available for children’s well-being.
