Get ready to bundle up as the second season of North of North returns to Ice Cove. The acclaimed comedy series, a collaboration between APTN, CBC, and Netflix, follows Siaja (played by Anna Lambe), a young Inuk woman navigating life post a very public break-up with her spouse.
The first season garnered international success, reaching Netflix’s Top 10 in 33 countries and impressing critics with its blend of humor and poignant storytelling. Co-creator and executive producer Stacey Aglok MacDonald shared, “We aim for comedy that resonates emotionally. We want to make our audience laugh and cry.”
The show received significant accolades, securing nine Canadian Screen Awards, including Best Comedy Series and Best Lead Performer in a Comedy for Lambe. Co-creator Alethea Arnaquq-Baril expressed surprise at the show’s immense popularity, stating, “We knew we had something special, but the extent of its success was unexpected.”
Season 2 picks up where Season 1 left off, delving deeper into Siaja’s complex life as she balances motherhood, work, dating, and strained relationships with her mother, Neevee (Maika Harper), and estranged father, Alistair (Jay Ryan). The season starts with Siaja coming to terms with her mother’s revelation about having an older sister, as she strives to rebuild her life and discover her true identity.
Lambe emphasized the turmoil her character faces this season, describing Siaja’s journey as descending into a “raw and messy” phase in her relationship with her mother. As Neevee begins to open up, their dynamic evolves, with Neevee’s business expanding while she navigates her connection with Alistair.
The production team returned to Iqaluit, doubling as Ice Cove, to maintain authenticity. MacDonald highlighted the importance of involving Inuit cast and crew to ensure the show’s genuine portrayal. The series draws inspiration from diverse Inuit fashion styles, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Arctic regions.
Season 2 promises unexpected plot twists, new characters, and deeper exploration of existing personalities. The cast, including Lambe, Harper, and Ryan, will be joined by guest stars like Bruce McCulloch and Elisapie. The highly anticipated season premieres in Canada on Sept. 1 on APTN+, with a broader release on CBC and Netflix following shortly after.
