Donald Trump has been warned against destabilizing NATO by considering a move to acquire Greenland, raising concerns about potential repercussions on the alliance.
The US President emphasized his strong intention on Monday to take control of the Danish territory, citing national security needs. Today, Keir Starmer is set to meet with European leaders and US officials in Paris, navigating a delicate position amidst escalating global apprehension.
Experts caution that the annexation of Greenland could jeopardize NATO, a union to which both the US and Denmark belong. The UK government maintains that the future of Greenland should be determined by Denmark and Greenland themselves, urging Trump to step back.
Criticism has been directed at Mr. Starmer for not directly addressing Trump’s actions regarding Venezuela, where President Nicolás Maduro was apprehended. Health Secretary Wes Streeting defended Starmer, emphasizing that the Prime Minister’s role is not that of a commentator but a world leader focused on national and collective security interests.
Streeting highlighted Starmer’s cautious approach to diplomacy, stressing that there is no justification for Trump to pursue control over Greenland. He underlined the support of the UK and NATO members for Greenland’s self-determination and its integral role within the Kingdom of Denmark and the NATO alliance.
Emphasizing the importance of maintaining NATO’s stability and collective security, Streeting reiterated that the current situation is not conducive to upending the alliance.
In an interview with NBC News on Monday evening, President Trump asserted that Greenland is crucial for the national security of the US, Europe, and other parts of the free world.
Regarding the UK’s stance on the issue, the Health Secretary highlighted clear communication with the US, emphasizing the Prime Minister’s deliberate approach in addressing matters related to Greenland and the broader US-UK relationship.
While some Labour MPs have criticized the Prime Minister for not taking a firmer stance against Trump, Streeting defended the government’s measured approach, emphasizing the diplomatic nature of influencing situations.
Streeting refrained from making derogatory comments about Trump, highlighting the efforts made by the Prime Minister and the Foreign Secretary to navigate the complex relationship with the US President.
The Prime Minister is expected to engage with global leaders in Paris at a meeting focused on Ukraine, where discussions on the unfolding diplomatic crisis are anticipated.
