“Father of Rugby Icon Rob Burrow Passes Away”

Geoff Burrow, the father of the late rugby league icon Rob Burrow, has passed away, as confirmed recently. He played a crucial role in the remarkable awareness and fundraising efforts that commenced when Rob was diagnosed with motor neurone disease.

Leeds Rhinos expressed their deep sorrow over Geoff Burrow’s passing on March 30th after a period of illness. Geoff, a Leeds native, tirelessly supported the MND community following Rob’s diagnosis in December 2019 and continued his advocacy even after Rob’s passing in June 2024.

Described as a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Geoff introduced Rob to his first rugby game at Headingley, igniting Rob’s passion for the Rhinos. Throughout his career as a trade union representative, Geoff championed those without a voice.

The club extended heartfelt condolences to Geoff’s wife Irene and the Burrow family during this difficult time, requesting privacy for the family to grieve. Leeds legend Rob Burrow fought MND until his passing in June 2024, with unwavering support from family and former teammate Kevin Sinfield, who undertook numerous physical challenges to raise funds.

Their efforts led to the establishment of the Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease at Seacroft Hospital in Leeds. Geoff expressed gratitude to all who contributed, emphasizing the center’s importance not only to MND patients and families but also to the dedicated staff.

Geoff played a crucial role in caring for Rob and his children, enabling Rob’s wife Lindsey to continue her work as an NHS physiotherapist. Reflecting on Rob’s peaceful passing, Geoff shared that they prioritized ensuring Rob’s comfort and dignity throughout his journey.

Messages of love and support poured in from rugby league clubs like Warrington Wolves, Wigan Warriors, and St Helens, expressing solidarity with the Burrow family during this challenging period.
