Keir Starmer has stated that he is considering various options for implementing a social media ban similar to Australia’s for individuals under the age of 16.
The Prime Minister has raised concerns about children’s excessive screen time and has pledged to take additional measures to safeguard their well-being. This announcement followed remarks from Wes Streeting, who indicated support for a ban, highlighting the risks of unrestricted social media exposure on children. During a visit to Scotland, the PM emphasized the need to enhance child protection from the impacts of social media.
“We are monitoring the situation in Australia, but we are open to exploring all potential measures to enhance safety, including considering restrictions for under-16s on social media,” stated the PM. He also expressed unease over the screen time of children under five, affirming the government’s commitment to addressing this issue promptly.
Last week, the NASUWT, a prominent teaching union, endorsed a ban, citing evidence linking unregulated social media access to behavioral issues in schools, negative effects on mental health, and exposure to inappropriate content among young individuals.
Health Secretary also voiced support for regulatory action, acknowledging the complexities of the debate and the positive aspects of online connectivity. Technology Secretary Liz Kendall is reportedly contemplating restrictions, with officials aiming for a timely decision. Commending Keir Starmer for seeking input from MPs, Streeting stressed the importance of addressing the challenges posed by social media’s impact on youth well-being comprehensively.
“I am deeply concerned as the Health Secretary about the detrimental effects of social media on the health, education, and life opportunities of young people,” Streeting emphasized. The potential consequences such as cognitive impacts, cyberbullying extending into homes through digital platforms, body image issues, grooming, and societal expectations were highlighted as key areas of concern.
