The UK is experiencing a significant drop in temperatures as January begins. Various regions in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland are advised to be prepared for upcoming snow, ice, and freezing weather conditions.
Multiple snow and ice warnings are currently in effect across the UK, with the Met Office stating that the cold weather will bring a variety of wintry hazards. Both roads and walkways are expected to be hazardous for travel due to the icy conditions.
The NHS has shared guidance on how to prevent slips and falls during icy weather conditions by suggesting people imitate the movement of penguins. The Greater Glasgow and Clyde NHS staff recommend “waddling like a penguin” as a safer way to walk on icy surfaces to avoid injuries.
Laura Halcrow, falls prevention lead at NHSGGC, emphasized the effectiveness of this method, stating that although it may seem amusing, it significantly reduces the risk of slipping on ice. She encouraged individuals to share this advice, especially with those who may have difficulty walking steadily.
In the event of a fall during the cold weather, it is crucial for individuals to carefully assess themselves before attempting to stand up. Moving to a safer area with less ice and using support from railings or walls is advised. Checking for any signs of serious injuries such as sharp pain, numbness, or dizziness is essential, and seeking medical attention if needed.
Dr. Claire Harrow, deputy medical director for acute services, recommended that non-urgent falls can often be managed at home using resources like the NHS Inform website or the NHS 24 app. If uncertain, individuals can seek advice by contacting NHS 24 at 111, where they may be directed to a Minor Injuries Unit for appropriate assessment and treatment.
