“£31.1 Billion in Unclaimed Pensions Found Using Innovative App”

Many individuals may overlook their pension funds, particularly if they have changed jobs frequently. Recent research by the Pensions Policy Institute (PPI) reveals that around £31.1 billion is currently unclaimed in lost pension pots.

John Ferguson, a 32-year-old security worker residing in Edinburgh, successfully located £10,000 in missing pension funds using the Penny app. Through the app, he identified seven pension pots, including two previously unknown ones, and anticipates uncovering more in the future.

Ferguson praised the Penny app for its simplicity in retrieving pension information, noting how it alerted him to forgotten pensions from past employers. The app functions by utilizing your National Insurance number and any available details about previous employment or pension providers.

While the Penny app offers the option to consolidate multiple pensions into a single fund, it is essential to consider potential fees from existing providers, loss of benefits, and charges associated with the new provider. Seeking free pension advice is advisable before making decisions regarding pension consolidation.

For those seeking lost pensions, the Government’s Pension Tracing Service is a valuable tool that requires inputting past employment details to locate pension providers. However, it only provides contact information and not investment amounts, necessitating direct communication with pension administrators for fund specifics.

Additionally, a new pensions dashboard tool is set to launch this year, allowing individuals to view all pension information in one place. By October 31, 2026, approximately 3,000 providers and schemes will be integrated into the dashboard for easy access to comprehensive pension details.
