“Switch to Energy-Efficient Heating to Save Costs”

As the winter season approaches, individuals who frequently rely on portable heaters are being advised to consider switching to more energy-efficient alternatives. While portable heaters are a common choice for many homeowners during colder months, they can significantly raise energy costs unnecessarily.

According to suggestions provided on the Citizens Advice website, it is recommended to limit the use of portable heaters as they tend to be more expensive to operate compared to central heating systems or storage heaters. If the central heating boiler is malfunctioning, repairing or replacing it is a more cost-effective solution than relying solely on portable heaters.

Despite the cost implications, portable heaters can still serve a purpose for numerous homeowners. Those opting to use these devices should adhere to the safety instructions accompanying the heaters and general safety precautions. It is crucial to keep heaters away from flammable materials like bedding, curtains, and furniture, ensure they are well-maintained, and maintain a safe distance of at least one meter to prevent potential fire hazards.

The London Fire Brigade has highlighted the heightened risk associated with fires involving heaters, emphasizing that a significant number of electrical fires are attributed to heaters each year. To mitigate risks, it is advised to have old electrical heaters inspected by a qualified electrician or replaced with new ones to ensure safety.

Similar safety precautions should be taken when using electric blankets or similar devices. The London Fire Brigade recommends unplugging electric blankets before bedtime unless they have a thermostat control for continuous use. Additional guidelines include refraining from using electric blankets with air flow pressure relief mattresses or emollient creams and avoiding simultaneous use with hot water bottles. Regularly checking for wear and tear, replacing blankets every 10 years, and storing them properly are also essential safety measures.

For individuals seeking to improve home heating efficiency and reduce energy consumption, enhancing insulation or installing more efficient heating systems like heat pumps are recommended. Citizens Advice highlights the potential energy savings achievable through home energy efficiency improvements, which can lead to reduced energy consumption for maintaining a warm home environment.
