“Cost of Living Crisis Deepens: Survey Reveals Growing Financial Strain”

Nearly 66% of adults have expressed that the cost of living crisis has intensified for them in the last month, according to concerning official statistics. Data released by the Office for National Statistics highlights that energy and food expenses continue to be major financial burdens for individuals.

Approximately 1 in 30 adults disclosed that they or their households had faced food shortages in the past two weeks due to financial constraints. This percentage increased to 8% among residents in the most deprived regions of England, as well as among renters and individuals with disabilities.

Furthermore, nearly 60% of respondents indicated that they are reducing dining out, indicating significant financial strain on restaurants and pubs struggling to survive. Amid these challenges, the Labour party has pledged to prioritize addressing the ongoing cost of living crisis in the upcoming year, recognizing its impact on voters leading up to the local elections.

The latest ONS survey underscores that the cost of living is the primary concern for the majority of adults (88%), surpassing other key issues such as the NHS, the economy, immigration, crime, and housing. The survey notes that these percentages have remained relatively consistent compared to the previous year, with the cost of living and the economy continuing to be pressing matters for the public.

The survey, conducted from early to mid-December, coinciding with the holiday season, revealed that 62% of respondents reported an increase in their cost of living compared to a month earlier. The survey also highlighted that the rise in costs was particularly pronounced among disabled adults, with the most common increases observed in food prices, energy bills, and fuel costs.

Additionally, a significant portion of respondents noted that they are adopting cost-saving measures, such as reducing dining out, opting for cheaper food options, and actively seeking discounts. The survey also found that a notable percentage of individuals struggle to afford energy bills, with some facing difficulties in maintaining adequate warmth in their homes.

Analyzing data from the past three months, the ONS discovered that women are more concerned about the cost of living than men, with 90% of women expressing worry compared to 86% of men. Concerns about the cost of living are prevalent among various demographic groups, including the unemployed, retirees, and self-employed individuals.
