“Poundland Completes Restructuring, Focuses on Price & Product Range”

Poundland recently completed a restructuring initiative that involved shutting down close to 150 stores and laying off 2,200 employees. The popular discount retailer now operates 651 stores, a reduction from approximately 800, with its workforce downsized from 14,200 to around 12,000 individuals.

As part of the overhaul, Poundland also closed two warehouses located in Darton, South Yorkshire, and Springvale in Bilston, West Midlands. In a significant move, the company was acquired by investment firm Gordon Brothers for just £1 last year. This acquisition, along with an approved rescue plan that included store closures, helped Poundland avoid administration.

Although Poundland has completed its restructuring program, the company emphasized that there is still much work to be done to regain stability. Moving forward, any potential future store closures will be driven by standard lease events that typically occur in a large retail network.

Recent data from Poundland indicates a 2.9% decline in like-for-like underlying sales for the quarter ending December 28. Despite reducing prices to align with its discount model, the company saw a 2% increase in comparable store sales by volume. Notably, underlying earnings in the first quarter surged from £8.4 million to £17.3 million, meeting the company’s projections.

Barry Williams, the managing director of Poundland, acknowledged the progress made in revitalizing the business with lower prices and an enhanced product range but stressed that there are further challenges ahead. Looking ahead to 2026, Poundland aims to focus on delivering a broader range of products and maintaining competitive pricing across all departments, including clothing, homewares, and grocery items.

Poundland revamped its pricing strategy by reintroducing a straightforward £1, £2, and £3 pricing structure for groceries across all its UK stores, with the majority of grocery items now priced at £1. The company also discontinued certain categories like frozen foods and some chilled products, in addition to discontinuing its online platform.

Furthermore, Poundland is reintroducing its in-house designed Pep&Co clothing line to its UK and Ireland stores, featuring items priced below £10. An upcoming nationwide advertising campaign will spotlight the everyday value offered by Poundland’s product ranges, aiming to attract and retain customers seeking affordable shopping options.
