Virgin Media has shared valuable advice on optimizing broadband speeds throughout the year. While common knowledge suggests keeping routers centrally located, restarting them monthly, and removing signal obstructions like fish tanks can enhance performance, the impact of weather changes is often overlooked.
As temperatures climb in late spring and summer, routers may face increased strain, necessitating placement in cool, well-ventilated areas.
Virgin Media explained in a recent blog update how warmer weather can stress broadband equipment, both indoors and outdoors:
“Elevated temperatures can strain broadband equipment, particularly routers inside homes. While outdoor equipment is resilient to high temperatures, internal routers may struggle if exposed to excessive warmth.
“Routers require adequate airflow for optimal functioning. If your Hub is concealed behind a TV, crammed into a cupboard, positioned near a radiator, or under direct sunlight, heat accumulation can occur, especially during a heatwave. This may lead to slower speeds, connection interruptions, or the router self-restarting to cool down.”
To counteract the impact of warm weather, ensure the router is placed in a cooler environment. While high temperatures can affect performance, other weather conditions are less likely to disrupt connectivity during your streaming sessions.
Virgin Media emphasized that most weather-related broadband issues originate indoors:
“Factors such as thick walls, excessive connected devices, and poor Hub placement often exert a more significant daily influence on your connection than external weather conditions.”
For optimal Wi-Fi performance, position your Hub in an open, central location away from direct sunlight. Additionally, avoid placing the router behind furniture or near large metal objects.
Virgin Media recommended inspecting cables after severe weather events:
“Following storms or strong winds, ensure that cables are securely connected and undamaged.”
Lastly, mitigate interference by reducing the number of connected devices simultaneously accessing the network.
