5.1 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Italy and Malta

Off the shores of Calabria, a 5.1 magnitude earthquake occurred this morning, affecting both Italy and Malta. Authorities noted a significant level of fear among the population following the seismic event, with individuals reporting being awakened by the shaking.

Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries or significant damage resulting from the earthquake so far. Emergency response lines in both Italy and Malta were inundated with calls in the aftermath of the tremor. This recent earthquake adds to a series of seismic activities in Calabria, with previous tremors being felt in different parts of the region in the past few days.

Domenico Costarella, the head of the Calabria Region’s Civil Protection Department, stated that residents clearly felt the quake, but no damages were reported after inspections were carried out in the area near the epicenter. The National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology reported that the earthquake’s epicenter was located off the Ionian coast at a depth of 65km.

Reports from local news sources indicate that people across Malta and Gozo were shaken awake by the earthquake. The seismic event, which occurred off the southern tip of Italy just before 6 am local time, also caused shaking in various parts of Italy and Malta.
