Lidl, the popular discount supermarket chain, is reportedly venturing into the mobile phone market with cost-effective phone plans to rival major network providers. To access these budget-friendly plans, customers will need a Lidl Plus account. This move is part of a significant £600 million investment by the supermarket giant, which also includes the expansion of 50 new stores nationwide.
Following the footsteps of other unconventional players in the telecommunications industry like Revolut and Klarna, Lidl aims to offer affordable phone services. While Lidl already provides this service in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, there are plans to introduce it in the UK, US, France, and Spain, as reported by the Financial Times.
The supermarket chain, through its parent company Schwarz Group, has partnered with 1GLOBAL communications provider to operate as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO). This strategic move allows Lidl to offer mobile plans by utilizing existing infrastructure without the need to build its own network.
In addition to its telecom venture, Lidl is expanding its physical presence by planning to open over 50 new stores within the next year, generating around 2,000 job opportunities. The supermarket chain, known for its affordable offerings, has a strong presence with over 1,000 stores across Britain, employing over 35,000 individuals.
The expansion initiative, set to commence this summer, will focus on acquiring various types of properties across Great Britain. Ryan McDonnell, the CEO of Lidl GB, emphasized the company’s commitment to supporting local communities by creating jobs and fostering regional growth.
As part of the collaboration, Schwarz Group will acquire a 9.9% stake in 1GLOBAL, a company with telecom licenses and partnerships in 12 countries. This move aligns with Schwarz’s broader digital strategy, which includes ventures into cloud computing, cybersecurity, and AI startups.
Industry analysts suggest that Lidl’s expansion into new markets could pose a challenge to established telecom providers, as the company’s competitive pricing and convenience offerings may disrupt the market. Employment Minister Kate Dearden praised the investment by Lidl, highlighting its positive impact on job creation and economic growth across various communities.
