Google and Back Market Offer Solution for Unsupported Laptops

Following the end of official support for Windows 10 by Microsoft almost half a year ago, numerous laptops are now vulnerable to potential cyber threats and malware attacks due to the lack of essential security updates. While some newer laptops can be smoothly upgraded to Windows 11 through Microsoft’s update program, many older devices do not meet the necessary system requirements, leaving users with a challenging choice.

Users with unsupported laptops have a few options: continue using the devices without support, pay for extended updates (ESUs), or invest in new laptops pre-loaded with Windows 11.

For those seeking alternatives, Google has introduced a new solution in partnership with refurbished electronics retailer Back Market. They have launched a USB kit that breathes fresh life into old laptops using ChromeOS Flex software.

ChromeOS Flex is a lightweight operating system compatible with many older computers, effectively transforming them into Chromebook-like devices. Upon installation, users can access services such as Chrome, Gmail, Docs, and the Android app store without the need to purchase a new laptop.

While ChromeOS Flex has been available for free download from Google, the new USB kits aim to simplify the installation process. Users can even test the system directly from the USB drive before making a full installation. These kits have gained popularity, with high demand leading to them currently being out of stock.

In a recent blog post, Google stated, “Last October was a critical moment for hundreds of millions of computers. With Microsoft Windows 10 reaching its end of support, these computers faced potential obsolescence, forcing users to choose between investing in a new device or continuing to use an insecure, outdated one.”

Google’s collaboration with Back Market offers the ChromeOS Flex USB Kit at an approximate cost of £3, with the USB stick being reusable to further reduce electronic waste. Despite the kit’s affordability, high demand has resulted in it being listed as out of stock by Back Market.

Beyond the revitalization of old laptops, Google emphasizes that ChromeOS Flex could have environmental benefits. Google mentioned, “Extending the use of already-manufactured devices through ChromeOS Flex helps reduce electronic waste and carbon emissions associated with manufacturing new devices. Additionally, ChromeOS is more energy-efficient, consuming 19% less energy on average compared to other similar systems.”
