Labour’s Metro Mayors Stand in Solidarity with Minneapolis Mayor after Controversial ICE Shooting

Last night, Labour’s metro mayors showed solidarity with the Mayor of Minneapolis following the contentious ICE shooting incident that has ignited anger within the city.

Mayor Jacob Frey garnered attention for swiftly condemning the shooting of Renee Good by instructing ICE to leave Minnesota immediately after the incident on Wednesday.

Video footage released recently, captured from the ICE agent’s perspective, revealed that Good, a mother of three, was turning her steering wheel to drive away from the agent when he fired three shots at her and hurled derogatory insults at her.

Contrary to assertions made by Donald Trump and JD Vance, the video contradicts claims that Good was intentionally attempting to run over the agent and that he acted in self-defense.

In a show of support, Labour’s metro mayors issued a statement endorsing Mayor Frey’s actions, emphasizing the importance of mayors in safeguarding communities with compassion and factual understanding rather than fear and aggression.

The statement, signed by prominent mayors including Sadiq Khan of London and Andy Burnham of Manchester, commended Mayor Frey and other U.S. mayors for upholding the dignity and human rights of their constituents during challenging times.

Meanwhile, demonstrators assembled outside a Minneapolis hotel where ICE agents were believed to be lodged, creating disruptive noises throughout the night to disrupt their rest.

Despite claims by JD Vance and Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin asserting self-defense, the new video evidence does not support their argument.

Mayor Frey dismissed any self-defense justifications as baseless, while policing experts noted that the video raised concerns about the officer’s training rather than altering perspectives on the use of force.

Experts highlighted discrepancies in the officer’s actions, such as holding a gun in one hand and a cellphone in the other while filming, indicating a lack of perceived threat from Good.

The officer involved, a 43-year-old Iraq War veteran with extensive service in Border Patrol and ICE, had previously been injured during an immigration arrest incident last year.

In conclusion, the released footage has prompted further scrutiny regarding the handling of the situation and the training protocols of law enforcement officials involved.
