Fire TV Stick users are being warned to exercise caution when installing new apps following the suspension of the popular tool “Downloader” from Amazon’s Appstore. The removal of Downloader has paved the way for a fraudulent copycat app targeting users’ finances.
The issue came to light over the weekend with the sudden disappearance of Downloader from Amazon’s online marketplace. For nearly a decade, Downloader has been a go-to tool for Fire TV owners seeking to sideload apps not found in official stores.
Despite its long-standing popularity, Downloader faced a temporary suspension due to a recent update that mistakenly classified it as a full web browser. Amazon prohibits third-party browsers on Fire TV devices, leading to the app’s removal.
Elias Saba, the developer behind Downloader and the Fire TV site AFTVnews, clarified that the app’s identification as a browser triggered the suspension. Saba swiftly addressed this issue in an update to ensure compliance with Amazon’s guidelines and hopes for a prompt reinstatement of the app in the Appstore.
During this downtime, users are advised to be wary of a fake version of Downloader attempting to deceive Fire TV owners with a subscription scam. Saba emphasized the importance of not installing the fraudulent app and urged users to report it to Amazon if encountered.
For existing Downloader users, it is recommended not to uninstall the legitimate app as reinstalling it will be impossible until Amazon resolves the situation. Additionally, users should disable Auto Offload to prevent the app from being automatically removed.
Pending approval from Amazon, Downloader may make a comeback on Fire TV devices later in the week, necessitating vigilance from users to stay informed about developments.
