“Extra Cold Weather Payments for 10 Postcodes Amid UK Freeze”

Cold weather payments have been activated for an additional 10 postcodes in England and Wales by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), bringing the total number of eligible areas to 451, with each qualifying for £25 payouts. This action coincides with a cold spell affecting the UK, prompting several amber and yellow weather alerts for snow and ice across the nation.

In England and Wales, Cold Weather Payments are disbursed to individuals receiving various benefits when an area is forecasted to experience sub-zero temperatures for seven consecutive days. Conversely, Northern Ireland and Scotland have their own heating bill support schemes, with Scotland providing assistance throughout the winter regardless of specific cold spells.

The DWP recently announced the activation of 10 more postcodes on January 3, ensuring that residents in these areas could receive the £25 payment directly into their bank accounts within a few days. Eligible individuals do not need to apply for these payments, as they are automatically distributed within 14 working days of postcode activation.

Minister for Pensions, Torsten Bell, emphasized the importance of Cold Weather Payments in aiding vulnerable households during temperature drops. Coupled with the ongoing Pension Credit uptake campaign and the commitment to increase the State Pension by up to £2,100 over the current Parliament through the Triple Lock mechanism, the government aims to provide essential support to pensioners during the winter season.
