Lindsey Vonn has emotionally announced her discharge from the hospital after suffering a severe leg injury during the Winter Olympics. Vonn was airlifted to the hospital while competing in the downhill event at the Winter Games in Italy after sustaining an ACL injury.
Following several surgeries, the skiing icon was initially released from the Italian hospital to return to the United States for further medical care. In a heartfelt Instagram post, Vonn shared details about her injuries, including compartment syndrome and a broken ankle, and expressed gratitude towards her surgeon for preventing the amputation of her leg.
Vonn explained in a video on Instagram that she had a complex tibia fracture, a fractured fibula head, and compartment syndrome, which occurs when excessive trauma leads to blood accumulation that can cause damage to muscles and nerves. Dr. Tom Hackett performed a fasciotomy to save her leg from amputation by allowing the affected area to heal properly.
Expressing her gratitude, Vonn noted that her recovery process was longer than expected due to low hemoglobin levels from blood loss during surgeries. She mentioned being wheelchair-bound currently due to a broken ankle but aims to progress to crutches in the coming weeks. Vonn outlined a potential timeline for her recovery, indicating the need for additional surgery to address her ACL in the future.
In her Instagram post, Vonn shared her relief at leaving the hospital and emphasized her commitment to rehabilitation. She anticipates a challenging yet hopeful journey ahead, with a focus on healing and regaining mobility. Vonn’s positive outlook and appreciation for her medical team resonated throughout her message, expressing determination to overcome the obstacles and return to full health.
