London Activist on 57th Day of Hunger Strike

Kamran Ahmed, who initiated a hunger strike in November 2025, has been readmitted to the hospital for the fifth time. During his recent hospitalization, Ahmed reported being restrained with double handcuffs, resulting in severe swelling of his wrists.

Medical professionals encountered difficulties in inserting a cannula due to the significant impact of the hunger strike on Ahmed’s body, with his veins shrinking considerably and proving challenging to locate.

Concerns have been raised by healthcare professionals regarding the treatment Ahmed has received during his multiple hospital visits. Now on the 57th day of his hunger strike, Ahmed is beginning to experience sporadic hearing loss, suggesting an escalating risk of permanent physical harm.

Despite the critical situation, where organ failure, paralysis, brain damage, and sudden death are looming possibilities, the British Government has refused to engage with the hunger strikers or their representatives, leaving their lives in jeopardy.

Legal representatives for the activists have issued warnings of the potential for fatalities and have initiated legal proceedings against the Government.

James Timpson, the minister of state for prisons, probation, and reducing reoffending, emphasized the government’s established processes for handling hunger strikes, expressing reluctance to meet with the hunger strikers or their representatives.

A Ministry of Justice spokesperson clarified that ministers do not intervene in individual cases to avoid prejudicing ongoing legal proceedings, advising that concerns about welfare and procedures can be addressed through established legal channels.

Ahmed, a London resident, faces accusations of breaking into the UK premises of an Israeli defense contractor near Patchway, Bristol, in August 2024, causing an estimated £1 million in damages.

Speaking to The Sunday Times, Ahmed shared his fears of potential death due to his hunger strike-induced health issues, including chest pains and moments of feeling uncontrollable vibrations and shaking in his body.

Despite the risks and lifelong implications, Ahmed remains committed to his hunger strike as a means to address oppression abroad and support his co-defendants, emphasizing the perceived value of his actions.

Francesca Nadin, representing Prisoners for Palestine, highlighted the deteriorating health conditions of the hunger strikers as they continue their strike, emphasizing their determination in seeking justice amidst the government’s apparent disregard for their lives.
