Fans were shocked to see prices reaching $106 for premieres of highly anticipated films like “Fjord,” “Prima Facie,” and “Love of Your Life,” with some even fetching $128 for front-row seats, as opposed to last year’s top tier prices of $98.
Diehard TIFF attendees, who typically watch up to 30 films during the 10-day event, are now reconsidering their premiere attendance due to the rising costs. Some fear being priced out of the festival, which was once known as “the people’s festival” for its affordability and accessibility to the public.
While many fans are willing to pay for the experience of watching films alongside the cast, they are feeling the strain on their wallets. Joel Chico, an actor, estimates spending around $2,000 on premium screening tickets annually, emphasizing the escalating costs associated with attending multiple screenings.
TIFF’s decision not to disclose the price ranges for each ticket category added to the uncertainty. Regular screenings were listed starting at $30 for non-members, while premium screenings commenced at $46. However, during ticket browsing, premium seats were found to be priced as high as $106.
According to Charlie Keil, a professor at the University of Toronto’s Cinema Studies Institute, the increase in ticket prices reflects both demand and financial needs. Arts organizations are grappling with rising costs, and TIFF is no exception, especially considering the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and increased expenses across the board.
Despite the festival’s revenue primarily coming from ticket sales and corporate partnerships, rising costs have led to higher ticket prices. TIFF’s ongoing financial challenges, coupled with the need to maintain its reputation and financial sustainability, pose significant hurdles.
Longtime TIFF attendee Cathy Crowe, while understanding the festival’s financial constraints, is disappointed by the escalating ticket prices. She reminisces about the days when tickets were affordable, allowing her to watch numerous films. However, recent ticket shortages and higher prices have made her question the feasibility of maintaining her diehard TIFF status.
