“Navigating AI: Parents Struggle for Online Safety”

AI’s influence is growing in our daily lives, presenting challenges for parents trying to keep pace with the rapid changes. Families are increasingly assisting their children in navigating a digital landscape saturated with AI, from social media interactions to schoolwork and social connections, as underscored by the recent Safer Internet Day.

The question arises: How can parents ensure their children’s online safety in a world where distinguishing reality from AI-generated content is challenging? In the spirit of enhancing online safety awareness, for the year 2026, we have teamed up with Tesco Mobile, a supporter of Safer Internet Day, to promote family discussions through The Family Chat initiative. The goal is to foster open and transparent dialogues at home about online safety, making the topic more approachable for families.

Renowned author and podcaster Giovanna Fletcher, a mother of three boys aged seven, nine, and 11, along with her husband Tom, will engage in conversations with parents and children on the prevalent issues they encounter. The initial dialogue focuses on AI and emphasizes the value of Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub as a crucial tool in aiding parents with children of all ages, up to 18 years old.

Similar to many families, the Karleys – comprising Anna, Emmanuel, and their children Joshua (13), Isaac (14), and Ruby (17) – heavily rely on electronic devices for connectivity. However, the parents acknowledge their limited understanding of AI, which poses a challenge in ensuring online safety. Anna admits, “I struggle to identify AI; there have been instances where I’ve mistaken AI-generated content for real, only for my kids to correct me.”

The family also acknowledges the difficulty in discerning authentic information from fake content. Joshua remarks, “Platforms like TikTok feature a plethora of realistic AI-generated content, making it hard to differentiate.”

Given that most schoolwork is now conducted online, often with AI-generated research, the Karleys and Giovanna are navigating this new reality. Giovanna observes, “I’ve noticed a shift to computer-based homework with my eldest in secondary school.” She emphasizes the importance of evaluating the usage of AI in education, advocating for a balanced approach that considers the effectiveness of its integration.

To guide children in utilizing AI safely, consider the following tips:

1. **Explore AI Together**: Engage in collaborative activities with AI to make the learning experience enjoyable and secure.

2. **AI Isn’t Infallible**: Encourage children to fact-check AI-generated information and question its sources for accuracy.

3. **Verify Age Restrictions & Privacy Settings**: Ensure compliance with age restrictions on AI platforms and review privacy settings together for a safer online experience.

4. **Discuss Authenticity**: Educate children on discerning real content from deepfakes or misinformation, fostering digital literacy.

5. **Utilize AI as a Tool, Not a Crutch**: Promote creativity and critical thinking alongside AI utilization, emphasizing problem-solving skills.

Anna and Emmanuel find solace in having access to a reliable resource for guidance. Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub offers user-friendly materials and toolkits to facilitate conversations about AI between parents and children. These resources include age-specific guidance on discussing safe AI use with kids, developed in collaboration with the UK Safer Internet Centre. Additionally, engaging AI quizzes are available on the platform to involve the entire family in learning and discussion.

The Karley family, already proactive in discussing online safety, appreciates the support provided by Tesco Mobile’s Online Safety Hub. Emmanuel notes, “We can now delve deeper into the topic, enhance our knowledge collectively, and better support our children.”
