Sir Sadiq Khan has expressed his belief that President Donald Trump is fixated on him following a recent verbal attack by the US leader. The Mayor of London characterized Trump’s ongoing verbal assaults as insignificant and pondered why the President didn’t focus on more pressing matters. This latest exchange is part of a prolonged feud that originated during Trump’s initial term in office.
In a recent interview with Politico, Trump criticized European leaders as “weak,” accusing them of harming their countries through immigration and contributing to the decline of the continent. He specifically targeted Mr. Khan, London’s first Muslim mayor, in his diatribe.
Trump remarked, “If you take a look at Paris, it’s a much different place. I loved Paris. Uh, it’s a much different place than it was. If you take a look at London, you have a mayor named Khan. He’s a horrible mayor. He’s an incompetent mayor, but he’s a horrible, vicious, disgusting mayor. I think he’s done a terrible job. London’s a different place. I love London. I love London. And I hate to see it happen. You know, my roots are in Europe, as you know.”
Sir Sadiq Khan brushed off the comments during an interview with LBC, stating that he preferred not to engage in a petty back-and-forth with the US President. He expressed curiosity about Trump’s preoccupation with him despite facing significant challenges in the Middle East, Ukraine, climate change, and trade issues.
When asked if Trump’s focus on him indicated obsession, Khan pointed out the President’s consistent fixation whenever a microphone was present, questioning the rationale behind it.
The London Mayor highlighted that politicians and conservative commentators frequently criticize the city, attributing it to insecurity over London’s progressive, liberal, diverse, and multicultural success. He suggested that their unease stemmed from London’s opposition to their values of unilateralism, nativism, and protectionism.
In response to queries about racism, Khan raised concerns over Trump’s targeted criticism and behavior, indicating a pattern of racism, misogyny, Islamophobia, and anti-Muslim sentiments. He emphasized London’s leading position in global rankings across various measures, questioning Trump’s selective focus on the city.
Sir Sadiq Khan reiterated his stance on Trump’s motivations and behavior, underscoring the President’s divisive rhetoric and discriminatory actions.
