The White House under Donald Trump has announced a sudden Press Conference today. The updated Daily Schedule now includes a press briefing with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. The exact topic of the conference remains undisclosed, but it comes in the midst of growing outrage following the fatal shooting of an unarmed woman by an ICE agent in Minnesota.
Since early morning, a large group of demonstrators has congregated around an immigration enforcement center in St Paul, Minnesota, after an agent shot Renee Nicole Good, a mother of three, while she was trying to drive away.
The press conference is scheduled for 1 pm in Washington DC, corresponding to 6 pm UK time.
Trump, in a post on Truth Social after the incident, falsely claimed that video evidence showed the driver intentionally running over the ICE agent, causing injuries. He also asserted that the officer who fired the shots is currently recovering in the hospital, although there is no evidence to support this claim.
Following the incident, Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota denounced the dissemination of misinformation, stating that the federal government had prematurely drawn conclusions about the incident without proper investigation.
A video of the event depicts one officer by the SUV’s front-left corner while another tries to open the door. As the driver steers away and attempts to leave, the officer fires multiple shots from close range. No other officers were in the vehicle’s path as it accelerated towards parked cars and crashed, with the shooter walking away unharmed.
Within an hour of the shooting, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem labeled the incident as an “act of domestic terrorism,” attributing the event to a scenario where ICE officers were allegedly attacked by the woman as they were stuck in snow, a claim refuted by eyewitness accounts.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey disputed the official narrative provided by the Department of Homeland Security, asserting that the ICE officers overreacted and acted recklessly, resulting in a tragic outcome. He criticized them for failing to uphold their mission of ensuring public safety.
